In general, The Icarus Foundation will seek to identify and, where possible, measure the contribution made by tourism both collectively and by its constituent sectors towards the generation of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and to identify actions and innovations that could reduce the volume of gases generated. We aim to do this through four areas:
Education
To provide input into both destination and corporate strategies, policies and programs that result in the reduction of greenhouse gases associated with tourism.
To develop tools and manuals for tourism businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Research/Action Projects
To develop innovative projects within and for the tourism sector that encourage visitors and tourism supplier to reduce their carbon footprint.
Communication/Advocacy
To advocate the importance of the Climate Change issue to the future viability of Canadian tourism through public speaking, blogs, articles, seminars and conferences.
CURRENT & PAST PROJECTS
The Icarus Foundation provided an overview of climate change and tourism in Canada for Industry Canada in the summer of 2007.
The foundation is currently working with industry associations to provide strategic advice to help the industry adapt to the impact of climate change and to identify and promote best practice.
The Icarus Foundation has just released a short guide to Greening your Festival or Event. Click here to download.
